Beyond the Fog: The Dogpatch and the Museum of Craft & Design

May 8, 2013

A few weeks back I dragged a few friends to the Dogpatch for the opening of the Museum of Craft and Design. Not only was I thrilled to hear about the opening of such a fun and creative space, but I had never ventured to this part of the city, so I was beyond excited for an excuse to put my adventure pants on and trek to this up and coming spot. The second we stepped off the Muni I knew I was hooked- there were blocks and blocks of brick covered buildings and trendy lofts littered with yummy coffee shops on each corner. And to top it off, the Museum of Craft & Design was hidden within one of these blocks and the opening was spectacular. There were food trucks parked out side with free hot dogs and cupcakes for all attendees, and the place was packed with families, art enthusiast, and folks looking for a fun Saturday afternoon activity. The main gallery was taken up by an installation by Michael Cooper, who crafted stunning sculptures made entirely out of wood.
The second gallery, Creatures From The Deep, was made up of underwater jellyfish that were entirely knitted and crocheted. The artist, Arline Fisch, was there and she shared her process and ideas behind the creations.
After roaming the galleries, we stepped outside to explore a little and found some amazing backdrops, which of course I forced my friends to pose in front of. I sure am lucky to have best friends willing to be such attractive models for me! I can't wait to go back and explore the neighborhood some more and check out new exhibits at the Museum.
